This position will serve as the Lead Camp Farm Assistant for DPF 4-H Camp, a residential summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County, located in Riverhead, New York.
The primary responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to: planting and harvesting vegetables, assisting with providing upkeep of farm grounds and buildings to maintain a safe and neat looking facility, and assisting with performing basic maintenance and custodial responsibilities at DPF 4-H Camp as directed.
This position will assist the supervisor from time to time with daily coordination of farm responsibilities.
This position will assist with supervision of employees and oversight of volunteers as needed.
This position accepts and performs all position duties outlined in this position description, and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the DPF 4-H Camp Director.
Required Qualifications: Associate’s Degree or Equivalent Education (GED/High School Diploma and one (1) year transferrable/functional experience).
Experience relevant to the role of the position.
Must be 21 years of age.
Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
Demonstrated knowledge/experience in one or all of the following areas: vegetable production and animal care.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge/experience with CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).
Knowledge/experience with safely using lawn maintenance equipment, including tractor/mower/weed whip operation/safety.
Knowledge/experience in one or all: general construction, plumbing and/or masonry.
Demonstrated ability to accept direction, guidance and supervision.
Demonstrated ability to identify and address safety concerns in the work place.
Demonstrated ability to work independently to initiate, organize, and implement established goals.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written and visual means.
Ability to accept direction, guidance and supervision.
Good character, patience, and self-control.
Administrative Responsibilities: Direction Assist Farm Supervisor with planning for the farm season.
Management Assist in providing supervision (including guidance and performance feedback) to designated staff as needed and assist in providing oversight for program volunteers as needed in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocol.
Assist in the management of staff and volunteer schedule to ensure program needs are met.
Provide regular staffing updates to the Farm Supervisor as needed.
Coordination/Operation Preform planting, weeding and harvesting of vegetables.
Assist with farm stand operations.
Assist with CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) operations.
Collection of eggs and preparing for sale.
Care and feeding of animals.
Assist with the coordination of the production of food crops and rotation for the farm(s).
Assist with creating a maintenance schedule for crops including planting, watering and harvest.
Maintain records of harvests for the Farm Supervisor.
Assist with coordinating livestock schedule.
Provide input to implement soil management plan.
Assist in the upkeep of farm grounds (cleaning, mowing, weed whipping, etc.
) to maintain a safe and neat look facility.
Make repairs and/or alterations as needed to farm facilities and/or grounds.
Assist in conducting daily inspections to ensure equipment is safe, clean and in good repair.
Drive Association van with produce.
Dispose of garbage and/or recyclables as needed.
Perform other maintenance duties as assigned by the Camp Director and/or Farm Supervisor for the efficient upkeep of the DPF 4-H Camp facilities.
Position Details: This is a temporary, seasonal non-exempt, full-time position, 100% FTE, 40 hours per week.
The hourly rate for this position is $19.
00 - $22.
00, commensurate with experience.
This position will run from April to the end of October.
This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation and sick leave.
