Position Focus:
The Accessibility Project Planner provides accessibility expertise to University Planning, Capital Project Management and Operations in the formulation, planning and execution of capital projects and accessibility accommodation projects.
Reporting to the Office of Facilities Planning Administration, the Accessibility Project Planner ensures that the Office of Facilities is meeting the University’s accessibility goals.
The Accessibility Project Planner will develop and manage reporting on accessibility projects and identify future project for campus wide accessibility improvements.
The Accessibility Project Planner will be responsible for planning and project management of capital projects primarily focused on accessibility.
Works within the University Facilities Planning Team to support the Office of Facilities’ planning, design and construction of accessible facilities.
Provides guidance to Office of Facilities planners and project managers on wide-ranging capital projects, including renovation and new construction.
Assists in developing the accessibility scope of work during project formulation, reviewing priorities of the University community, code interpretations and options, University guidelines and standards, initiatives of peer institutions, and current trends.
Participates in design meetings with project teams to review the accessibility approach early in the project and pro-actively engage in the design progress.
Manages the planning and design of capital projects with an accessibility focus, working with external architects, engineers and related consultants.
Advises project teams from a knowledge base that is informed by the goals of the University, the attributes, of the University’s existing buildings and technical background related to accessibility solutions.
Develops, manages and maintains documentation related to accessibility attributes of facility assets.
Evaluates the portfolio based on accessibility metrics and produces presentations that communicate the accessibility status of the campus.
Liaisons between Facilities and other University departments involved in accessibility accommodations.
Participates in strategic planning for accessibility initiatives.
Essential Duties 1.
Develops planning models based on the needs of department and institutional priorities.
2.
Participates in the resolution of planning and technical conflicts and recommends cost effective options and approaches.
3.
Ensures that institutional planning objectives and strategies are incorporated into departmental plans and projects.
4.
Manages authorizations by preparing succinct presentations that distill complex project issues into distinct, clear options, thereby allowing for informed and timely decision-making.
5.
Establishes priorities for the allocation of design resources.
Provides information and recommendations on physical and comprehensive planning and design issues, large scale planning studies, and special facilities planning topics.
6.
Manages and reviews the progress and quality of the work performed by outside and in-house consultants.
Manages the work efforts of external architects and engineers.
7.
Acts as the primary contact among project architects, other consultants various building committees, technical and operations groups, and staff members during the planning phase of the project.
8.
Provides advice to ensure conformity with specifications, codes, regulations, and University Design Standards.
Develops engineering and architectural program requirements.
9.
Resolves conflicting issues with consultants, project scope, budgets and schedules.
Develops overall project budgets including construction, consultant and other fees, furnishings and equipment, operations and testing costs.
Manages the selection of consultants.
10.
Ensures projects in the planning phase are completed within the approved budget and schedule, and conform to applicable codes and zoning ordinances.
11.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Planning and seven years of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1: Proven ability to develop planning solutions and participate in the resolution of planning and technical issues, recommends cost effective options and approaches.
Ability to synthesize technical programmatic needs, develops alternative planning solutions to use as tools for establishing design.
Required Skill/Ability 2: Proven knowledge of architectural, engineering and construction technology, practices, and principles.
Knowledge of building codes, zoning ordinances and related regulations and construction scheduling software.
Experience with ADA (American with Disabilities) projects including conditions on campus such as historic buildings, steep landscape grades, urban crossings etc.
Required Skill/Ability 3: Proven knowledge of project development and execution and budgeting.
Knowledge of financial practices including life-cycle cost analysis.
Well-developed organizational, analytical, oral and written communication and managerial skills.
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Required Skill/Ability 4: Adept at working in a cross-functional environment in a highly collaborative manner.
Ability to process multiple assignments, set priorities, and to lead project teams to meet objectives.
Required Skill/Ability 5: Ability to communicate with members of the academic, scientific and healthcare communities to understand and discuss specific research and clinical needs.
Ability to work within a project team structure Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Experience in the professional practice of planning, architecture, and/or construction management.
Experience performing in a leadership capacity.
Experience with institutional/academic building types and large-scale construction programs.
Preferred Licenses or Certifications: Valid Professional Architectural registration.
