5 Work Week Standard (M-F equal number of hours per day) Work Location West Campus Worksite Address 840 B31 Research West Campus Drive West Haven, CT 06516 Work Model On-site Position Focus: Responsible for supporting an interdisciplinary team from seven research groups (Kathryn Ferguson, Joel Butterwick, Kallol Gupta, Daryl Klein, Yansheng Liu, Wei Mi and Joseph Schlessinger) whose overarching goal is to develop and apply innovative approaches to study integral membrane proteins (IMPs) in their native environments.
Works with the team leaders to develop approaches to generate complex biological samples for use in an array of state-of-the-art experimental approaches.
Responsible for the generation of these complex samples via manipulation of DNA, cloning, CRISPR gene editing, tissue culture, expression and purification of recombinant proteins and other methods.
Suitable candidates will have proficient molecular biology and tissue culture skills including PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, gel electrophoresis, CRISPR/Cas9 and RNAi technology, transfection, lentiviral transductions and western blot analyses.
Experience protein biochemistry desirable.
Coordinates sharing and distribution of these generated biological samples and other reagents among the team for use in specialized experiments.
Train laboratory members in sample preparation.
Position requires someone with excellent communication skills and who is comfortable working in difference environments.
Well qualified and motivated individuals will have opportunity to gain additional responsibilities in select advanced sample analysis approaches.
Essential Duties 1.
Recommends the design and implementation of procedures and protocols under the direction of a higher-level authority.
2.
Investigates, analyzes, and reaches preliminary scientific conclusions related to research planning 3.
Ensures data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
4.
Analyzes, develops and interprets scientific results.
Maintains clear documentation of results.
Prepares scientific reports and papers for research proposals and published reports.
5.
Performs independent research and laboratory techniques and participates in experimental research planning.
6.
Interacts with internal contacts including the PI, research assistants, graduate students, Radiation Safety and Biological Safety officers, and Animal Care personnel to discuss and evaluate research results and to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the laboratory.
7.
Interacts with external contacts such as researchers at other institutions, staff at biotechnology and reagents companies to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
8.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience Master’s Degree in a scientific discipline and one year experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1: Ability to work individually and as a team member.
Required Skill/Ability 2: Strong technical and scientific abilities to perform complex laboratory experiments and procedures including CRISPR gene editing.
Detail-oriented in experimental work and record keeping.
Ability to maintain clear documentation of results.
Required Skill/Ability 3: Ability to follow complex, multi-step protocols precisely and understand the scientific basis of the protocol and troubleshoot complex, multi-step protocols with limited supervision.
Required Skill/Ability 4: Positive attitude, strong work ethic and the ability to work directly with others or to work independently (depending on the given task).
Ability to be trained on new techniques and experimental protocols.
Excellent time management skills to manage multiple ongoing projects.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: Master’s Degree in the biological sciences and at least one year experience in a biological science laboratory research environment.
Expertise in CRISPR gene editing.
