5 Work Week Standard (M-F equal number of hours per day) Work Location Central Campus Worksite Address 2 Whitney Avenue New Haven, CT 06510 Work Model On-site Position Focus: The newly created office of the vice provost for planetary solutions is responsible for accelerating and coordinating research, training, and activities in climate and sustainability across University boundaries.
The goal of the office is to promote and transform Yale’s capacity to produce, transmit, advance, and operationalize knowledge to realize solutions to the planet’s most pressing challenges.
The assistant provost for planetary solutions will report to and work closely with the vice provost for planetary solutions.
The person will contribute to building and managing relationships with faculty and staff across the University to promote and coordinate planetary solutions-related research, teaching, and activities.
In collaboration with the vice provost, serves as the University’s representative on planetary solutions and sustainability to internal and external audiences, such as potential collaborators, partner organizations, and peer institutions.
Essential Duties Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: - Collaborate with the vice provost on a strategic plan for planetary solutions efforts at the University including producing strategic plans and budgets.
- In partnership with the vice provost, consult and meet regularly with the planetary solutions faculty and staff councils as well as leadership in planetary-solutions relevant centers, programs, departments, and offices across the University to ensure coordination and facilitate collaboration.
- Support the vice provost in partnering with the University Development Office on developing proposals and opportunities that align with planetary solutions priorities; plan and organize the strategic donor engagement of the vice provost in advancing planetary solutions priorities.
Develop opportunities to engage internal and external stakeholders in the University’s planetary solutions work through active communication and events.
Proactively identify content, stories, infographics, reports, and presentations that bring visibility to the University’s work on planetary solutions.
- Support the vice provost on overseeing the grant management process for the planetary solutions grants funds; establish and refine grant-related policies and processes, including the promotion, solicitation, and publicity for each grant cycle; coordinate standard responses for applicant inquiries with the planetary solutions project staff.
- Staff and manage the faculty and staff advisory committees, support the establishment of and then staff and manage the external advisory board for planetary solutions.
Prepare presentations on planetary solutions to internal and external audiences.
Partnering with the Provost Office Finance team on financial planning, including the development of budgets, staffing plans and operations in support of the Vice Provost.
Help coordinate, and possibly manage the administrative support and activities.
Additional duties and special projects as assigned.
The successful candidate will be expected to work outside of normal business hours.
Required Education and Experience Advanced degree in a related field.
Academic and/or administrative experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1: Deep knowledge of climate, sustainability, planetary solutions, and change management strategies.
Demonstrated with strategic planning, research administration, and coordinating interdisciplinary programs intra- and inter-organization.
Required Skill/Ability 2: Demonstrated leadership in cross- disciplinary research organizations and planetary solutions-relevant committees.
Exceptional writing, verbal, and interpersonal skills are essential.
Excellent judgement and discretion essential.
Required Skill/Ability 3: Ability to organize and synthesize many disparate pieces.
Ability to identify synergies across multiple stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to be adaptable, thorough, and able to work with substantial independence, including leading meetings with senior faculty and staff, and speaking on behalf of the vice provost as appropriate.
Required Skill/Ability 4: Demonstrated ability to think agilely and collaborate.
Results-oriented.
Organized with excellent follow through.
Required Skill/Ability 5: Demonstrated ability to be flexible, adaptable, and resourceful to meet ever-changing needs.
Demonstrated ability and success building relationships in complex and highly collaborative work environments.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills: PhD preferred; Higher education experience preferred.
A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience also preferred.
